Does My Dog Have Bloat?

Bloat or CDV (Gastric Dilatation Volvulus) in dogs is a serious and life threatening condition that can cause the stomach to twist or flip. The dog’s stomach fills with gas, which in turn causes the stomach to swell and then can cause it to flip.

The symptoms include: a distended abdomen, hyper panting, drooling, pacing, retching with no vomiting and whining. All of these symptoms represent pain. If you notice any of these symptoms, transport your dog to the veterinarian immediately. Waiting even a few minutes can be the difference between life and death.

Bloat normally affects large dogs with deep chests and dogs that are age seven years and older are higher risk. If you have a large breed in your family, please educate yourself to the risk factors.
